Epilepsy is a central nervous system disorder which causes people to experience recurrent seizures. The condition affects people in vastly different ways because there are several causes and various types of seizures. There are two main seizure types, generalized seizures which affect both sides of the brain, and focal seizures, which affect only one part of the brain. Focal seizures are also called partial brain seizures.

Approximately 2.5 million people have been diagnosed with this condition in the United States, and 9 percent have had at least one seizure during their lifetime. Seizures are caused by abnormal nerve cell activity in the brain and result in unusual behavior, leg and arm twitches and even unconsciousness. If you've had a seizure in the past, it does not necessarily mean you have an epileptic condition.
